Personality:
Positive Trait: Dedicated. Krem is a passionate, committed young man, loyal to his friends and colleagues, committed to his causes, and persistent in pursuing what he views as the right or just course of actions for himself or others who cannot necessarily defend themselves. The Iron Bull makes a remark about this commitment to the betterment of others in dialog if he is trapped in the Fade with the Inquisitor during the Inquisition mission Here Lies the Abyss, momentarily marking his lieutenant: “Come on Chief! Let’s join the Inquisition. Good fights for a good cause!” From a young age, he has stuck to his beliefs – in himself, in his choices, and even in his society despite the anguish it often causes him. As second in command of the Bull’s Chargers, he is often the one that people both within and without the troupe will go to for his opinion and reaction, as a sounding board for complaints, and the one that other members of the corps can go to when the Iron Bull is being “too much of a hard ass.” Even if he himself is occasionally sarcastic and insubordinate, his commitment to the health and welfare of the troupe, and his support of decisions made by the Iron Bull, make him reliable and dependable. When the Chargers join the Inquisition, Krem is the de facto leader of additional missions that the Chargers can be utilized on, showing not only his commitment to his role but his dependability for the Inquisition, filling diplomatic, covert, and militaristic roles as needed.

Negative Trait: Insecurity. Krem’s insecurities are often subtle, couched in sarcasm, self-deprecation, and a casualness that attempts to gloss over more mortal concerns. He describes that knowing he was trans wasn’t “the easiest thing to know about yourself, growing up in Tevinter one wrung above slavery.” Often, his insecurities seem as tied to his social status – improved from Tevinter but still precarious at times – as they are to his gender presentation. When the Iron Bull explains the Qunari concept of aqun-athlok to the Inquisitor, Krem seeks assurance: “And Qunari don’t treat those aqun people any different than a real man?” When the Inquisitor asks about his background, particularly about his experience knowing he was trans from an early age, Krem mentions, “Every day, I’d put on a dress, look into my father’s shaving mirror and just hate myself.” A major underpinning of his insecurity is also tied to how he views himself as of use to others, referencing such things as “[my mother] was happy to take the money I sent as a soldier,” and “I’d served for a few years. I was good at hitting things.” He’s been the subject of a society that already dismisses him, as a member of the second lowest caste and one step out of slavery at all times, and compounding that with his gender is a perpetual point of concern and danger.

Negative Trait: Deflecting. Krem isn’t prone to offering information unless he’s asked for it. Even the reveal of his gender is subtle enough that an imperceptive observer might gloss over it – and that’s how he’d prefer everything be. When asked about many of his life experiences, he speaks only in the broadest of terms, with casual statements about his adolescence such as “[My parents] tried to find me a nice merchant’s son,” “My mother wanted to throw me out … not that it mattered in the end,” “I was up for promotion, but the healer I’d bribed … ,” and “It’s a crime to lie on an imperial application for service.” His flippant approach to talking about himself not only keeps others from digging too deeply into the events of his past but allows him to gloss over any self-perception of weakness, failure, or other insecurity. Even in stories of past exploits of the Bull’s Chargers, he speaks only in the broadest of terms, offering just enough information to be intriguing without giving particularly substantial information. Some of his deflection is a function of being a sword for hire, and working under an excellent spy; others suggest a lifetime of having to conceal himself for his own safety.

Negative Trait: Stubborn. Krem’s stubbornness is multifaceted, like so much of his approaches to things. Part of it comes from a place of relatively new-found indulgence: now that he isn’t living as hand to mouth as he was when he was growing up, he can afford to slack off, laze about, and gripe about needing to train, and he’ll dig his heels in a bit when he’s feeling particularly put on. When the Inquisitor first goes to the Storm Coast to meet the Iron Bull and the Chargers, as they are getting ready to leave, Bull tells Krem to get everyone packed up; “But Chief, we just opened the casks. With axes!” He bemoans the labor of not getting to enjoy their revelries not only because it’s a waste of the moment, but also because it’s an undue pressure that he has to shoulder. Most of Krem’s stubbornness is borne not from this indulgence and perceived laziness, but instead from his passion and forthrightness. Because he grew up under the strain of an oppressive caste system, and because he is often viewed as an outsider alongside his fellows, he views slights against them and perceptions of his own inabilities as particularly egregious. He seems to particularly relish missions where he’s allowed to lean into this stubbornness and disrespect for certain authority figures, including such missions as teaming up with bandits against the person that hired them when it became apparent that both the bandits and the Chargers were being pitted against each other by the same noble.
